Every year, the third Monday of January is dubbed “Blue Monday” and that falls today on Monday 18 January. The theory goes that this is the time of year when we’re all cold, broke and riddled with guilt that our new year’s resolutions to get fit, drink less alcohol and be a better human being have fallen by the wayside.
Although this year you might feel like you have plenty of reasons to feel a little blue and worried, let’s not allow ourselves to be caught up by what is in effect a marketing gimmick. One positive of Blue Monday is it gives us a chance to think of the stigma surrounding depression and raise awareness of its symptoms. What we can take from Blue Monday is that we all have mental health and that there are steps we can take all year round to protect it. This is an ongoing challenge so it is important that we all do more to self-care for our mental health in the way we look after our physical health, without stressing about it.
As life ebbs and flows, what always helps us when we are feeling blue is turning to our yoga. Let your yoga practice nourish and inspire you. Know that we are all here to support each other both on and off the mat. Whether we’re feeling good or bad, sad or happy, high vibe or low – everything is likely to be magnified. If there was ever a time to cast aside the things that bring you down, it’s right now! This week focus on what brings you joy and what makes your heart sing. Speaking of singing, this Blue Monday let some uplifting tunes nourish and ground you as you flow through your yoga practice.
